Storm to Blanket Northeast With Up to One Foot of Snow

Updated Dec. 15, 2013, 10:49 a.m.

A blustery winter storm dumped more than a foot of snow in Maine and Vermont Saturday and continues to hammer parts of Massachusetts and Maine’s coastal communities.

More than seven inches of snow covered parts of Connecticut, while New York City’s Central Park accumulated 5 inches as the storm turned into freezing rain and sleet. The storm, which began in the Midwest and continues to hit the Northeast, affected nearly 100 million people, USA Today reports. The National Weather Service said majority of the storm should clear up by mid-afternoon Sunday as it moves toward Canada.

In the Midwest, chilling temperatures and snow hampered agricultural channels and multiple car accidents were reported across the region as well as in the Northeast.

An estimated 1,200 flights were canceled, including 375 out of Newark, N.J.
