A Downingtown Public School Tops Pa. Performance List

DOWNINGTOWN, Pa. (CBS) — The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has released its school performance profiles, and the #1 school is one you may not know.

The Downingtown STEM Academy had the highest score of any public high school in the state, on Pennsylvania’s new School Performance Profiles.

The three-year-old magnet school topped even Lower Merion High School and Central High, in Philadelphia.

Art Campbell, headmaster at Downingtown STEM, says the school will graduate its first class this year.

“Our teachers in the sciences really focused on it, and they did a real good job using data to drive their instruction for our kids,” he told KYW Newsradio this morning.  “And it obviously paid off.”

The SPP includes scores on the standardized Keystone exams.   Downingtown STEM scored 101.4 on the SPP.

Statewide, 73 percent of schools scored at least 70.  But in Philadelphia, only a little more than…
