President Obama’s Kenyan-born uncle will be allowed to stay in the United States, and will qualify for citizenship in five years if the government doesn’t appeal. An immigration judge in Boston ruled Tuesday that 69-year-old Onyango Obama is a person of “good moral character,”
Obama has lived in the United States since the 1960s. He was ordered to leave the country in 1992, but remained. He was then arrested in 2011 in Framingham on a drunk driving charge. The charge was dismissed after he finished a year of probation and alcohol education classes.
Obama told the judge he graduated from high school in Cambridge, received a philosophy degree from Boston University, worked for years as a manager at a family-owned liquor store, and helped African immigrants get settled in the U.S.
